Outrage, Apathy, Indifference, Numbness.

Collectively, as a people, we are essentially a mob - inept, insensitive, brutal. Individually, we're selfish and apathetic. Suitably, we are governed by a collective with the same qualities, and comprised of similar people granted with the added potency of "power".

She's gone. And nothing has changed. The rapes and gang-rapes continue. The government continues to be insensitive and inept. The police continues to be absent when most required. Monsters continue to walk among us. We continue to be outraged.

Until we experience outrage fatigue, and move on - as apathetic and selfish as ever. Outrage is easy. Stop pretending like you give a damn. All of this, including this write-up, is social media grandstanding. Lighting a candle, writing, and sloganeering might be glamorous. But they're just images - media fodder.

If you, if we - want real change, we'd join politics. We'd join the police. But we haven't, and very few of us will. Drop the facade of caring - you don't, we don't. Not until something affects us. Not until its your mother, sister, or girlfriend. Don't dismiss it. Oh but you will, you're the apathetic people of India. Enjoy your new year frivolities. Enjoy your morbid Darwinian glee.

  1. Also, we Indians as a collective breed suffer from 'Metathesiophobia' which is the fear of change/newness. We all pray that some savior leaps from the darkest of corners and puts an end to everything. And if a certain someone does do it, we burden him from tags, felicitations thus, turning him disillusioned in the end. The guileless public mourning should instead pave way for unfettered opposition, only then things will start to look better.
